York City controller, James D. Sneddon is also president of Market Street Solutions, a consulting firm he established in 1998 to provide media expertise, fundraising, grant writing, visioning and other facilitated operations, as well as writing, editing and design support.
A community activist, he has spoken out against discrimination and is involved in empowering neighborhoods. He has served on numerous community boards, including board memberships with the Children’s Home of York, the YouthBuild Charter School Board, Lincoln-Edison Charter School Board, York Little Theatre and York City Dollars for Scholars.
He was the Community Mobilizer for York City, A Community That Cares.
He has almost 40 years of experience in the newspaper industry, working at newspapers in three states and holding positions from sports reporter to editor and publisher.
He has been recognized for his expertise in winning numerous writing, reporting and design awards, including a National Headliners Award for the best investigative reporting in the nation and recognition in 1988 as Ingersol Newspapers’ journalist of the year, selected from employees at more than 185 newspapers throughout the country.
From 1998 to 2000, he published a citywide monthly magazine, Observations. It focused on city events, news and people.
He spent three years at a Lutheran Seminary after graduation from Muhlenberg College in 1965 with a B.S. degree and a major in mathematics.
He and his wife Joyce celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary in 2003. They have three adult children, Rebecca, Sarah and Robert (twins)
A resident of York City, he is a native Pennsylvanian, born in Coaldale.
